MEDIUM Cisco Systems, Inc. Vulnerability Alert

Product:

Snort 3

Summary

Multiple Cisco products are affected by a vulnerability in the Snort 3 detection engine that could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause the Snort 3 Detection Engine to restart, resulting in an interruption of packet inspection. This vulnerability is due to incomplete error checking when parsing remote procedure call (RPC) data. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to cause a DoS condition when the Snort 3 Detection Engine unexpectedly restarts.

Details

Severity Base Score CVE
MEDIUM 5.8 CVE-2026-20068

Exploitation

An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted RPC packets through an established connection to be parsed by Snort 3. By doing so, the attacker can trigger the Snort 3 Detection Engine to restart, leading to a denial of service condition.

Affected Products

  • Snort 3 Detection Engine: Vulnerable to DoS due to incomplete error checking in RPC data parsing.

Mitigation

To mitigate this vulnerability, it is recommended to apply any available patches from Cisco and ensure that the Snort 3 detection engine is configured securely. Regular monitoring of network traffic for unusual RPC packets can also help in identifying potential exploitation attempts.
