Product:
Snort 3 Detection Engine
Summary
A vulnerability in the memory management handling for the Snort 3 Detection Engine of Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to cause the Snort 3 Detection Engine to restart. This vulnerability is due to a logic error in memory management during Snort 3 SSL packet inspection. A successful exploit could lead to a denial of service condition when the Snort 3 Detection Engine unexpectedly restarts.
Details
| Severity | Base Score | CVE |
|---|---|---|
| MEDIUM | 5.8 | CVE-2026-20052 |
Exploitation
An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted SSL packets through an established connection to be parsed by the Snort 3 Detection Engine. By manipulating the SSL packets, the attacker can trigger the logic error in memory management, causing the Snort 3 Detection Engine to restart and resulting in a denial of service.
Affected Products
- Cisco Secure Firewall Threat Defense Software: Vulnerable due to the Snort 3 Detection Engine’s memory management logic error during SSL packet inspection.
Mitigation
To mitigate this vulnerability, it is recommended to apply any available patches from Cisco and ensure that the Snort 3 Detection Engine is configured correctly. Regular monitoring of network traffic for unusual patterns can also help in identifying potential exploitation attempts.
